A cyber crime gang thought to be based in Russia, recently hacked into the private details

of around 100,000 people working for

organisations, including Aer Lingus, British Airways, Boots and the BBC, and attempted to blackmail

the companies asking for a ransom or they would release the data. It's not an isolated incident.

The cyber attack on the outsourcing company Capita in March

meant private data from 90 companies were breached. In the hands of criminals, your personal data

can be used to make cloned credit cards, buy phone plans, falsely claim government benefits,

and even take out a mortgage, all done in your name and for which you can become liable.

So what can you do to stop this happening to you?

And what can you do if it does happen to get your money back?
