Summary

With GC on vacation, Jack Fitzhenry joins Zack to dive into what's happening at SCOTUS. They discuss the new cases the Court has agreed to hear, the oral arguments involving the CFPB's funding, whether an ADA tester's lawsuit is moot, and whether South Carolina legislators committed an unconstitutional gerrymander when drawing its latest Congressional map.

Zack then interviews Judge Miller Baker of the Court of International trade about his career and what's happening in the legal profession today.

Finally, Zack sees how well Jack can answer trivia about Jack's alma mater (University of Michigan) and SCOTUS.

happening at the Supreme Court, what the justices are up to, and other things related to our

While the court is back in action, GC is off this week, deserving some well-deserved R&R,

Doing okay.

Well, I'm glad you're here too,

0:44.4

and later in the show we'll see what kind of SCOTIS trivia shops you have, but for now,

0:50.1

let's get right into it with new grants. After its annual long conference where the justices consider all of the petitions that have piled up over at summer recess, the court granted

0:54.9

certiorari in 12 cases. Now, we won't cover all of those cases today, but we will mention a few

1:01.4

that are worth keeping an eye on. Among those cases are two. One is Moody v. Netchoice,

1:07.5

and the other is Net Choice versus Paxton, where the court will be asked to

1:11.3

decide whether certain provisions of Florida's and Texas's social media laws violate the

1:16.4

First Amendment. There's also an interesting takings clause case, DeVilleur versus Texas,

1:22.1

where the court will be asked to decide whether the takings clause is self-executing so that someone

1:27.0

can seek redress, even where

1:28.8

a state's legislature has not affirmatively provided them with a cause of action.

1:33.3

And the court will also be asked to decide the contours of its unconstitutional conditions

doctrine, which is basically a doctrine that says governments can't place conditions on certain grants and other
