John 8: 12-20- 'I am the light of the world.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 2466 (in 'Living in the Truth')- In Jesus Christ, the whole of God's truth has been made manifest. "Full of grace and truth," he came as the "light of the world," he is the Truth. "Whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness" (abbreviated).

Hi everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Gospel Exegesis podcast. As always, what we want to give you is a really solid in-depth dive into the text, a really solid

0:22.6

exegesis of the literal sense of the text. Now, today's reading is John chapter 8 versus 12 to 20.

0:29.8

That's the one you'd hear at today's mass. Interestingly, you would only hear this one every three

0:34.3

years. So usually the weekday readings are the same every single year, but this

0:39.1

is one exception, this particular one you only hear on a weekday in year C. So John chapter 8

0:46.1

verses 12 to 20. Here's the text. Jesus said to the Pharisees, I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will not be walking in the dark. He will have the light of life. At this, the Pharisees said to him, you are testifying on your own behalf. Your testimony is not valid. Jesus replied, it is true that I am testifying on my own behalf,

1:14.0

but my testimony is still valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going.

1:20.8

But you do not know where I come from, or where I am going. You judge by human standards.

1:27.2

I judge no one. But if I judge, my judgment

1:31.0

will be sound, because I am not alone. The one who sent me is with me. And in your law,

1:38.4

it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is valid. I may be testifying on my own behalf, but the father who sent me is my

1:47.7

witness too. They asked him, where is your father? Jesus answered, you do not know me, nor do you

1:56.6

know my father. If you did know me, you would know my father as well. He spoke these words in the treasury

2:04.5

while teaching in the temple. No one arrested him because his time had not come. So that's our

2:13.3

interesting reading for today. Most of us have heard that quote, I am the light of the world, but we often don't read the bigger context. So what is the context here? So Jesus is in Jerusalem

2:23.4

for the festival of booths, or festival of tabernacles, as it's called sometimes. Now, he has already

2:29.5

proclaimed on the last day of the festival of tabernacles, he has said in the temple, if anyone thirst,

2:35.9

let him come to me and drink. Now, that particular part where Jesus talks in the temple in the

2:42.9

festival of booths, it's read in various times in the liturgical year, so sometimes in Lent,

2:47.8

sometimes in Advent, and some of chapter 7, where Jesus has this long speech

2:52.7

in the temple, it's only available as bonus episodes. So I'd recommend checking out the bonus episodes,

2:58.2

which are available through the Patreon page of John Chapter 7 in order to get the lead-up to what we
