Matthew 7: 1-5 - 'Do not judge, and you will not be judged.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 678 (in 'To Judge the Living and the Dead') - Following in the steps of the prophets and John the Baptist, Jesus announced the judgement of the Last Day in his preaching. Then will the conduct of each one and the secrets of hearts be brought to light. Then will the culpable unbelief that counted the offer of God's grace as nothing be condemned. Our attitude to our neighbour will disclose acceptance or refusal of grace and divine love (abbreviated).

0:18.0

Thanks again for tuning in.

This is the Catholic podcast where we take a look at the

0:22.1

lectionary reading from today's Catholic Mass, particularly the gospel reading, and we have a go at

So you've probably all heard these words before,

0:50.8

but let's really get into it to see if we can work out what Jesus probably had in

0:55.4

mind when he said these words. So, we are looking at Matthew chapter 7, verses 1 to 5.

1:03.5

Jesus said to his disciples, do not judge and you will not be judged, because the judgments you give are the judgments you will get,

1:13.0

and the amounts you measure out is the amount you will be given.

1:17.9

Why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the plank in your own?

1:23.9

How dare you say to your brother, let me take the splinter out of your eye when all the time there is a plank in your own?

1:32.1

Hypocrite, take the plank out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take the splinter out of your brother's eye.

1:43.1

So we're in the sermon on the mount, and the sermon on the mount basically is

1:47.6

Jesus giving an extended sermon contrasting what some people in his time believe to be righteousness

1:54.3

with what he considers to be true righteousness and what he expects his followers to have when

1:59.9

they display true righteousness.

2:02.5

In chapter six, Jesus discussed prayer, piety and providence, the three peas, and now we're
