The U.S. hit a grim milestone late Friday, 700,000 COVID-19 deaths.

Losing the population of Boston aside, it's not all bad news.

After two months of climbing, the average daily deaths are once again trending down, currently

about 1,850.

In the pharmaceutical company Merck announced their new antiviral pill, malnuperivir, cut

the risk of hospitalization or death in half.

Current COVID patients are often treated with monoclonal antibodies, which are pricey and

require an IV and thus a nurse.

A take twice daily for five days option would provide hospitals with some much-needed

relief.

Meanwhile, the FDA's panel of advisors got a few meeting invites for October.

Topics of discussion include boosters for Moderna and J&J, mixing and matching vaccines,

and authorizing vaccines for youngsters, ages 5 to 11.
