Pro-EU parties largely held their ground in Sunday's European elections.

One of the F.T.'s Brussels correspondence, Jim Brunston, was at the European Parliament as results were coming in.

He explains what we can take away from the votes so far.

One thing that's already clear is a shrinking of the main center left and

center right blocks in the parliament and votes effectively being siphoned away

to a mixture of pro-EU reformists such as parties allied with

Emmanuel Macron, the French President's Lera-public-on-Marche Party and also to anti-EU forces or Eurosceptic parties such as the Lalega Party of

Matio Salvini in Italy. All that means collectively that we're going to have a

more complicated European Parliament in a way, a more fragmented kind of centre ground, a more difficult

coalition building and that has an impact not just on the European Parliament's

policymaking but also on the rest of the functioning of the EU because the Parliament plays a critical role in
