988 is a replacement for the 10-digit national suicide prevention hotline, which was famously

under-resourced, last year nearly one in five callers hung up while waiting to be connected,

and traffic is expected to surge with the new number.

teams to reduce the burden on police in mental health crisis situations, all with 988 as

the backbone.
