Can someone please explain to me what a resort fee is and why we have to pay it?

Because I've always been under the impression that when I stay at a hotel, the rate for the room should cover the stay, right?

Well, if you've ever bothered looking at the receipt when you check out of a hotel. You'll notice there is the fee you agreed to

in order to stay there. Then they'll add on tax and then they'll tack on a resort fee. Sometimes

it's called a destination fee or an amenity charge or a service fee. Now, according to the hotel industry,

those charges are for the extras they provide, like the phone in your room that you probably don't use,

or the super slow Wi-Fi provided by the hotel, along with access to things like their gym or their pool.

But here's the interesting thing.

If you don't use those services or those amenities, you don't get the money back.

It's not like they waive the fee.
