Let's start off with a big piece of school news. Seattle Public School Superintendent Brent Jones announced today he's stepping down.

Sammy West has more on what this means for Washington's largest school district.

In a video message Monday, Jones said the decision stems from a desire to spend more time with family and comes after, quote, much reflection.

It's been an honor to serve as superintendent of Seattle Public Schools

and to give back to the community that shaped me.

I take pride in the progress that we've made together,

and I remain committed to supporting our students, educators, and families during this transition.

Jones has led the district since 2022 and has faced many challenges during his tenure,

including a pandemic and an ongoing budget crisis.

The district faces a nearly $100 million shortfall next year and under Jones' leadership

considered closing up to 21 schools last fall.

After months of community outcry, the district abandoned those closure plans.
