It's Monday, September 15th. Starting with grief on the water,

whale watchers spotted an orca this weekend, carrying her dead newborn calf on her nose off Orca's

island. Researchers say that whale mama has lost her last five children in a row. John Ryan reports.

It's not known why this orca, called J-36, has lost so many offspring, but most pregnancies

among the Northwest's endangered orca population end in miscarriages or calves that die soon after birth.

Researchers say the biggest cause is a shortage of nutritious food. These southern

resident killer whales like to eat Chinook salmon. Those are the biggest and fattiest of all salmon.

But with habitat loss and pollution up and down the west coast, the Pacific Ocean is producing

fewer and smaller salmon, making it hard for orcas to stay fed.

Two other orcas are currently pregnant.

Researchers launch small drones that can spot the orca's baby bumps from the air.
