It's Monday, October 27th. Amazon workers are likely on edge. There's reporting today that the company

plans to lay off up to 30,000 corporate workers as soon as this week.

Company officials have not confirmed the news, which was first reported by Reuters.

Geekwires Todd Bishop says if the notices go out as expected tomorrow morning, they would be a giant

reduction to Amazon's corporate workforce that currently numbers around 350,000 people.

If that happens, this could be a pretty significant blow to the tech economy in Seattle

and also to the broader economy.

By comparison, Microsoft has laid off about 15,000 people globally.

And we assume that these 30,000 in Amazon's corporate workforce would also be global, but that gives you a sense for the scale.

Bishop says he's heard the projected cuts will be broad-based. Most likely, employees at warehouses and fulfillment centers as well as engineers and program managers will not be affected.
