Tropical Storm Hillary made landfall over Mexico's Baja California Peninsula

yesterday before moving northward to become the first tropical storm to hit Southern

California in 84 years.

Early yesterday, Hurricane Hillary weakened to a tropical storm.

Still, rainfall forecasts ranged from a few inches in L.A. to nearly a foot in Nevada.

SoCal's desert areas could be slashed with a year's worth of rain, causing life-threatening

flooding.

As the storm crawled north, mudslides stopped traffic in Antelope Valley and a 5.1 magnitude earthquake

shook several South California counties, including Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Ventura.

California governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm,

which canceled flights and Hollywood pickets, closed beaches and schools,

shuttered Disneyland early, and prompted the Navy to clear their ships from San Diego Bay.
