In 50 years of doing this job, I can't remember a less satisfactory

crop of referees. The standard is worryingly low and we are in crisis where match officials are concerned.

The danger is games are now being materially influenced by bad decision making as much as they are by the efforts of the players.

Some will claim bias, I will say incompetence.

And the biggest problem of all,

you can't tell a bad referee,

he had better be a good referee.

The unsatisfactory are with us

and the game is a hostage to fate as a consequence.
