The story of the nation and its colourful, chaotic and often corrupt leaders is told by Paul Kenyon in his new book, Children of the Night.

I spoke to Paul to find out more.

Thank you very much for joining me, Paul, to talk about the history of modern Romania.

I think that many of our listeners, and I'll throw myself into this book as well before I'd read your book, may not be too familiar with the history of Romania.

So what are some of the biggest misconceptions that you come across about Romanian history?

You know, that is a really good question because I know a lot of Romanians and these misconceptions that are about to talk about that they really, really dislike them.

I mean, these are the things that upset Romanians, including my wife. So number one, obviously,

is Dracula. And so Dracula was a real individual. And Dracula was somebody who was called Vlad Tepeche,

Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracula and his father was Vlad Dracul.
