Scientists have accidentally created a new fish hybrid.

While trying to induce a form of asexual reproduction to help the fish they were studying breed in captivity, a response to the diminishing numbers caused by overfishing

and pollution, Hungarian scientists accidentally created offspring from the American paddlefish

and the Russian sturgeon. The internet is calling the hundreds of resulting offspring,

Sturtlefish. We never wanted to play around with hybridization. It was absolutely unintentional, said Attila

Mosar, a senior research fellow at the Research Institute for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Hungary

and a co-author of the study. Quoting the New York Times, both the paddlefish and the sturgeon

are known as fossil fish because of their ancient lineage.

Their last common ancestor swam during the age of the dinosaurs,

and the two have been evolving independently on opposite sides of the planet for over 184 million years,
