In this week's Moment we hear author and transformational coach, Bethany Webster, discuss the Mother Wound. I'm really excited to dive into this conversation.

0:11.8

Let's start right at the start.

0:15.0

All right.

0:15.7

Which is, what is the mother wound?

0:18.8

The mother wound, as I define it, is a set of limiting beliefs and patterns that we inherit from our mothers that cause us to limit and self-sabotage ourselves.

0:29.6

One could also say it's how the patriarchal belief that women are less than gets passed through mother to daughter. It's like we bond with our mothers,

0:39.3

but we also bond with her beliefs. And all women, to some degree, have had to internalize

0:45.4

beliefs about not being good enough, about not rocking the boat, about all these beliefs about

0:51.1

what a woman can and should be. So we inherit this to some degree from

0:55.9

our mothers. She might have explicitly or just implicitly shared certain beliefs about what's

1:02.6

possible for women, what's okay, what's taboo. And there can also be trauma between mothers and daughters,

1:08.1

which also is more common than we realize. And it's been a

1:11.9

taboo subject. So this work of the mother wound is about how we receive wounding from our mothers

1:18.1

and how that shapes our sense of self. And it's something that hasn't really been, I don't think,

1:23.8

looked at enough. I think it's the core of like everything for women. And it's not

1:28.2

about blaming mothers. It's not about making mothers wrong or anything like that. Actually,

1:32.1

I think ultimately this will raise respect due to mothers and women as a whole as we do this work.

1:40.2

It's really about healing those intergenerational patterns. Well, I mean, that's kind of my absolute passion.

1:46.7

There's a lot that I want to talk about.

1:49.7

And I almost want to unpick every word that you just said, which we will.

1:52.8

But I'm super curious, how did you come to this work?

1:55.6

You know, you've been studying this 20 plus years.
