Humans have always had a complicated relationship with the cold.

Snow falls, sound disappears, and everything looks calm from a distance.

But for the colonists of the late 17th century, winter wasn't peaceful.

It was a predator.

It was the season when the larder slowly emptied, when the woodpile shrank faster than anyone wanted to admit, and when the thin boundary between life and death became

as fragile as a pain of window glass.

In the winter of 1697, the people of St. Mary's County, Maryland were already dangerously

close to that edge.

They had endured years of drought that had turned their tobacco fields to dust.

The crops had withered under relentless sun, leaving the soil dry and stubborn.

Families watched their livelihoods crumble in slow motion as the land stopped giving back what it once had.

And then came the frost.

The records describe it simply as bitterly cold,

the kind of winter that seemed to harden the entire world. Waterways froze solid, turning to iron

beneath the gray sky. Travel became nearly impossible, and the small settlement of Seymour Town found itself increasingly cut off from the rest of the colony.
