Summary

“Who’s coming with me to Washington?” Kitty Brandtner asked, the day after the July 4th mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois.  Kitty had been attending a similar event nearby with her young family when a man with an assault weapon opened fire on families and parade goers. In a mix of grief and fury, Kitty took to social media and nearly overnight, she mobilized a team of citizens who were also ready to turn their grief into action.  The March Fourth movement was born. Within just one week,  volunteers planned a rally attended by 500, and organized meetings in Washington, D.C. with lawmakers with one clear mission:  To ban assault weapons nationally.  Survivors from Highland Park were joined from families of victims from Uvalde, TX to demand action from our government.  The noise from this effort resulted in the House of Representatives passing HR 1808. The next stop is the United States Senate following the summer recess.

But the work of March Fourth is far from over. Money is still needed to keep the message loud, clear, and consistent until the bill becomes a law. A big part of this is maintaining media presence and driving awareness. March Fourth has also made great efforts to run interference between the families who wish to grieve privately and the media who have violated that privacy. According to Kitty, this is not a political issue, but a human one.

Those interested in supporting can spread the word via social media by following and sharing the the information from @march_fourth_.

Quotes

• “It is this incredible group of mostly women, but also men. It’s not just moms and it’s not just parents—it’s people from all walks of life. But the common theme is that we don’t believe that we should feel unsafe going to a grocery store, concert, parade, sending our kids to school, etc. It shouldn’t be this way.”(14:19-14:43 | Kitty)

• “Part of what makes this easy is we only have one goal, there’s no convoluted six-step plan. Our goal is to federally ban assault weapons and to do it right now. That’s it.” (16:45-16:59 | Kitty)

When there’s a will, there’s a way. If something matters and you put all your energy into it, you’re going to make it happen. There’s no alternative.” (27:00-27:09 | Kitty)

Dear Founder, as you know, there's no blueprint for entrepreneurship. You wear so many hats,

0:09.7

you burn the men'side oil, you pour your heart and soul into everything that you do. But without a

0:14.8

doubt, the journey is worth every single second that you put into it. I'm Lindsay Pinchuk,

0:20.5

host of the Dear Founder podcast. I say this

0:23.3

because I've lived it for over a decade. I started my first company with $500 in my pocket and a

0:29.1

baby in my belly. I grew it and I sold it all. This podcast is my weekly letter to you. We'll

0:35.8

talk all things starting, growing, nurturing, and in some

0:39.7

cases even selling a business. Together with some of my closest contacts, I'm here to help you find

0:45.1

your own success, whatever that means to you. The ride as a founder is the ride of your life.

0:50.7

So come on and join me for another episode that will get you one step closer to

0:54.9

reaching your own founder goals. Welcome back to another episode of Dear Founder. Today's

1:02.0

episode is a little bit different in that our guest today has only been a founder for just over a

1:07.4

month. And she became a founder really on accident. This was not something that

1:13.1

she intended to do. But what she has done in the last month is nothing short of remarkable.

1:20.4

And given the topic and what is going on in the world around us, it was so important to me to

1:27.1

have Kitty Bratner on Deer found her to not only

1:29.7

talk about how she founded and created the March 4th movement, but how you can get involved

1:35.5

and what is coming next. Today's topic is really important to me. It's incredibly important to so

1:43.9

many of you and I know to the community that I

1:46.6

live in. On July 4th, 2022, I received a text from one of my best friends at 1025 a.m. Keep in mind,

1:54.9

this is someone that I grew up with. This is someone I've been friends with my entire life,

1:58.5

but neither of us grew up here in Chicago.
