There is this narrative, this undercurrent, this promise of building your own business.

But legally, is an MLM a small business path?

No, legally, you are an independent contractor for the company when you join an MLM.

So in a sense, you have your own business.

You are an independent contractor with one customer and that customer is the MLM that

you have joined.

So you're providing services to that company and they do not have obligations to you as

though you're an employee.

They don't have to pay you a minimum wage.

They don't have to give you paid time off.

They don't have to give you other benefits.

You have to supply your own equipment and tools and pay your own taxes and those are the

things that make it feel like you're a small business owner.

But this is where a lot of the criticism of MLMs come into.
