Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have a Dream speech was delivered to commemorate the 100th

anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.

It was only to be four minutes, but then Gospel singer, Mahalia Jackson shouted, for King

to quote, share the dream.

And he did.

Of America living its founding creed, of slaves, and descendants of slaveholders sitting

together as brothers, of states long defined by injustice transformed into places of freedom,

and in what may be the best measure of progress and race relations that we have of a future,

and which his children would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content

of their character.

Now his dreams closer to reality than ever, but it's also threatened by dismissal on

one hand and by theories that elevate the color of skin above everything else on the

other.

So what's the way forward?

Where King showed us, by grounding his dream and biblical references imagery and mandates.

There's really no other way forward.
