Trent Rezner, the genius behind nine-inch nails, wrote the song, Hurt.

At the height of his own spiral, a confession carved out of self-loathing and numbness, a man sifting through the wreckage he had made of himself. In his hands, this song,

released in 1994, was an intimate autopsy, industrial hollow, soaked in the cold fluorescence of

addiction and despair. It was a young man's confrontation with ruin, the voice of someone

who believed he was already beyond saving. Every line was a wound, and Reznor never pretended otherwise.

But when Johnny Cash covered it, the song transformed.

It aged.

It deepened.

It became a haunting ode to a time lost that could never be recaptured.

In 2002, Rick Rubin, the legendary producer,

behind everyone from the Beastie Boys and Slayer to Jay-Z and the Red Hot Chili Peppers,

produced Cash's album, The American

Four. The man comes around. Rubin chose Hurt for Cash because Ruben recognized in his

raw confession the perfect vessel for an old outlaw's final reckoning.
