| 0:56.7 | like? Obviously, that election drug on forever, so you had a limited amount of time compared to what |
| 1:00.8 | normal presidents, normal presidencies are, but just kind of take our audience through the month |

| 1:11.6 | You know, I had been in the Reagan administration, and that was more |
| 1:15.5 | conventional, those were more conventional inaugural. |

| 1:22.7 | As you say, no one knew who had won the election until well into December, and when the courts finally settled that, |
| 1:32.1 | and so people like me weren't even contacted until then. So you asked me what I remember, |
| 1:38.4 | not too much because it was a blur of activity. First, deciding to leave business and go take that job. |
| 1:45.7 | Secondly, to go through everything one did to get into it. |
| 1:51.0 | You know, the Democratic Senate was still in charge in December, and they did a very, I thought, |
| 2:00.1 | statesman-like or gracious thing. They held hearings |
| 2:04.1 | for incoming cabinet members so that the president could appoint us on the very first day, |
| 2:10.9 | on inaugural day. The three that they started with were Cole and Pout State, Don Rumsfeld |
| 2:16.0 | Defense, and me. |
| 2:24.9 | And so I was actually confirmed at the very first moment, right after the president took the oath, |
| 2:27.2 | he went inside and signed those commissions. |
