So let's talk a little bit about Washington, D.C.,'s inauguration, which is the big deal, obviously today, and is why we're doing this special, much of our program today

dedicated to the inauguration of President Trump. And again, if you're just joining us,

former Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, is our guest. So obviously, you go in as a part of

OMB. You're running OMB in the early days of the Bush administration. Can you take us through

what the buildup to inauguration in 2001 was

like? Obviously, that election drug on forever, so you had a limited amount of time compared to what

normal presidents, normal presidencies are, but just kind of take our audience through the month

and a half, two-ish months of buildupup for that? Very astute question.

You know, I had been in the Reagan administration, and that was more

conventional, those were more conventional inaugural.

But the 2001 was very different.

As you say, no one knew who had won the election until well into December, and when the courts finally settled that,

and so people like me weren't even contacted until then. So you asked me what I remember,

not too much because it was a blur of activity. First, deciding to leave business and go take that job.

Secondly, to go through everything one did to get into it.

You know, the Democratic Senate was still in charge in December, and they did a very, I thought,

statesman-like or gracious thing. They held hearings

for incoming cabinet members so that the president could appoint us on the very first day,

on inaugural day. The three that they started with were Cole and Pout State, Don Rumsfeld

Defense, and me.

And so I was actually confirmed at the very first moment, right after the president took the oath,

he went inside and signed those commissions.
