Summary

Nathan Jacobs is a renaissance man. As an artist, author, philosopher, professor and filmmaker, Dr. Jacobs is truly an inspirational, informative and interesting individual. He joins Hank Hanegraaff for a series of podcasts seeking to better explain Eastern Orthodoxy and explain away many of the most common misconceptions people have about Eastern Orthodoxy. In this podcast they discuss why many Christians today have a misunderstanding of faith and works. Additionally, far too many Christians today misguidedly disregard the importance of Mary to the Christian faith and they discuss the role of Mary in the incarnation and the profound theological implications as the mother of God.

Topics discussed include: Why do some Evangelicals believe that Hank Hanegraaff left the Christian faith when he became Eastern Orthodox? (0:20); discussing the differing framework of faith and works in the East and the West (4:20); we are not saved by good works, but for good works (17:30); discussing the Dormition of the Mother of God, Mary (20:25); the perpetual virginity of Mary (23:20); the role of Mary in the Incarnation and the profound theological implications (31:30); a preview of the next conversation in this podcast series with Nathan Jacobs on Sola Scriptura (35:00).

Well, I'm doing a series with my good friend Nathan Jacobs.

Nathan Jacobs is a filmmaker, an academic, and he's also someone who understands Eastern Orthodoxy

in the most profound of ways.

And so I thought he would be the perfect person to talk to with respect to some of the

things that have taken place since I've become Eastern Orthodox.

0:49.9

Obviously, as you know, Nathan, I've been studying Eastern Orthodoxy for a long period of time

0:54.8

before I became Eastern Orthodox. When I did become Eastern Orthodox, I was amazed at how people

1:01.6

reacted. There were a lot of people that suggested that I had left the Christian faith,

1:07.5

that Eastern Orthodoxy is not within the pale of orthodoxy or Christianity in general.

1:16.0

And in the last podcast, I sort of teased this by saying that my son David did an article,

1:23.1

which we posted on the web, titled, Does the Bible Answer Man Man's Son believe that he's left the Christian

faith? As so many people have said, happened when I became a member of the Eastern Orthodox

Church. Well, there was a group, a group of very zealous evangelicals tied to well-known

1:44.0

Christian leaders within the evangelical community

1:46.9

that reacted to my son's article with an article titled Hank Hanagraph's son says his dad is still a

Christian even though he left Christianity. They start an article which says that Hank Hanegraph left the Christian faith

in April of 2017 in joining the Eastern Orthodox cult. Hanegraph began to worship idols.

2:12.6

We talked about icons, so I won't get into that.

2:16.6

Hanegraph began to worship. Idols denied penal substitution, no longer believing that Jesus

died to pay for his sins. Now, this goes on, but again, these are people who are evangelicals

2:29.6

who desperately desire that people follow the faith once for all delivered to the saints.

2:37.3

And again, for them, a stumbling block is that I left the Christian faith, I joined a cult,
