Nearly 100 years older than Alcatraz, the Haunted Missouri State Penitentiary has a very dark history. Stories of abuse, dungeons, malnourishment, riots, murder and more are all disturbing chapters in the life of this massive gothic structure. Today it sits as a museum and tourist attraction, for years it was home to the worst of society. For others, it was their final stop before putting to death by the gas chamber.

2:18.9	In 1836, we opened our doors and accepted the first enmate. We were in operation until 2004.
2:31.3	That's 168 operating years of history can find in a 47-acre area, which is just mind blowing.
2:44.8	When this building was built, it is one of the gothic, massive structures that people, when they see it today, that's what they see.
2:54.8	Many saw for a long period of time. When it first opened in the 1820s, is that how it was originally constructed or how did it begin in terms of visually how it looked?
3:05.3	We're not 100% sure. The buildings that faces the entrance when you come in, that building wasn't built until 1905.
3:17.7	The original buildings, we do know that they were small. It was a 70-room cell house. We're not sure of the exact footprint of where that building was constructed.
