Yesterday, Congress returned from its summer recess.

There are lots of questions about what these lawmakers will focus on in the weeks ahead.

That question was especially pertinent for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Remember, every member of the house gets voted in for two years.

They got some measure of job security. Except McCarthy.

That was easy, huh?

It took a historic 15 rounds of voting before McCarthy was able to take control of the gavel.

When he became Speaker, he struck this deal with his fellow Republicans.

He basically said, if you don't like what I'm doing, any one of you can call to remove me from power as Speaker.

For the last two months, we worked together as a whole conference to develop rules that empower all members.

He was basically saying, I will hold the vote you want me to hold. I will go as hard as you want me to go.
