62 years ago 20 year old audrey Backaberg disappeared from a small city in

South Central Wisconsin after reportedly hitchhiking with her family's babysitter and catching a

bus to Indianapolis. Nobody ever knew where she went or what happened to her until last week.

Earlier this year, the case was reviewed and Backaberg was tracked down thanks to her

sister's ancestry DNA data. Backaberg is now 82 years old, alive and well, and currently lives outside the state of Wisconsin,

and told a detective she left on her own accord.

The detective says an abusive husband might have played a role.

Days before she vanished, Backeberg filed a criminal complaint against her husband, Ronald,

alleging he battered her so badly she was left with head

injuries. After running away, she never contacted her family or her two kids. One of her children

died in 2006 and Ronald, a short time later, her mother died in 2023 without ever learning what
