Hi, Crime Junkies. I'm your host, Ashley Flowers, and I'm Britt. And the story I have for

0:06.3

you today is one that probably could have gone the way of so many other cold cases, a

0:12.5

little less attention year after year until finally forgotten completely. But instead,

0:18.8

this case has stayed alive for over 37 years, thanks to the tireless efforts of two parents

0:25.4

who have never given up the hope that they'll one day know what happened to their daughter.

0:30.3

This is the story of Denise Flum.

0:55.4

It's March 28, 1986, and Judy Flum is getting home from her job at the local bank. Now, it's

1:12.6

like the middle of the day. It's good Friday, but the bank is closed for this like weird three-hour break

1:17.7

kind of in the middle of the day for the religious holiday. It's from like noon to three. And on this

1:22.6

day, the weather is beautiful and warm. It's one of those days when you can just tell when

1:27.9

her is on its way out. Well, when Judy gets home, it's just a little after 12, and her 18-year-old

1:33.8

daughter, Denise, is actually getting ready to leave. Because you see the night before, Denise

1:38.3

had been at the spring break bonfire party out in this field, but at some point during the party,

1:43.6

she lost her purse. And so now she's planning to go back to where this happened at and see if she

1:49.0

can find it. So she tells her mom that she had asked a few friends if anyone could go with her,

1:53.5

maybe to help her search, but everyone is busy, so she's just going to go it alone. So Denise

1:58.3

heads out in her parents' Buick at around 12.30, and Judy starts doing some work around the house,

2:03.7

taking advantage of her time off to just get some things done. Now, here's where my source material

2:08.6

kind of varies a bit. Most of what I read said that hours start to go by, and that eventually,

2:14.4

Judy has to leave again, and Denise still isn't home when she leaves. But other sources say that

2:19.4

not even an hour after Judy got home, which would have been around like one o'clock, there's a knock

2:24.2

at the door. And the person at the door is Denise's cousin holding Denise's purse in their hand.
