When I was a very young man, college kid, actually, I read a book about Thomas Merton.

Thomas Merton was, and for all I know, still is, arguably anyway, the most influential

American Catholic author of the 20th century.

His autobiography, The Seven-Story Mountain, sold over a million copies. It was translated into over 15 languages.

He wrote over 60 other books and articles on topics that ranged from monastic spirituality to civil rights, to nonviolence, to the nuclear arms race.

He ruffled some feathers, that Thomas Merton.

He didn't stay silent, like many expected a monk to do, especially a trappist monk.

He had things to say.
