We have such an attachment to our stuff. You almost have to say what's more important,

using my space more efficiently or holding on to that memory.

It feels to me like our culture is always telling us that collecting stuff is the whole

point of living. It's a sign of success. But the trap is that once you have the stuff, you got to keep it and you got to find a place for it.

I've got a problem that's probably common to a lot of people.

A long, long time ago when I first moved out of my parents house and went away to college, most of the

stuff that I'd collected to that point stayed behind.

For years or so, my single

years, I moved from one bedroom apartments to roommate living to more one bedroom

apartments and meanwhile this collection of books and clothes

and sporting goods and papers and trophies and records

and crap moved from storage space to storage space.

In fact, I kept adding to it. Until finally my family moved into a house

of our own and everything went into the garage along with my wife's own pile of crap
