0:24.0	You see, Alton is a town with an inordinate number of what have been called Ladies in

0:29.9	These of these spectral creatures have been with us for more than two centuries and have
0:34.0	appeared in towns and villages across the country, not just in Alton.
0:39.3	Many times these unnerving specters have a message to deliver, the living.
0:43.7	A warning that something terrible is going to happen.
0:47.0	Like the banshee of Ireland and Scotland, they warn of approaching death, disaster, or doom.
0:53.4	They usually stay for a short time at a place where a tragedy often occurs and then they
0:57.6	are never seen again.
1:00.6	Others though linger much longer.
1:03.6	In the 1890s, there were frequent reports in Chicago of a lady in black appearing near
1:08.0	a deadly railroad crossing.
1:10.0	For more than 50 years, a lady in black appeared in the coal mining community of Carbondale,
1:14.2	Pennsylvania, and predicted several mining disasters and even a cholera epidemic.
1:20.1	A lady in black in New Jersey appeared just before a deadly fire.
1:24.4	And the list goes on.
1:26.2	The story of Alton's most famous lady in black has been part of our folklore for decades.
1:31.2	It's a story that many dismiss as just a legend of a woman who appeared on Powder Mill
1:35.7	Road near the Olin plant just before a disaster occurred.
