Summary

In this Minisode Monday, we address why graduating from school into the workforce isn't a pass to stop learning. The world is constantly changing, and the true professional is a perpetual student. Understand why learning and growth should be seen as a prerequisite for success -- not a distraction. The Cheat Sheet - Learning Is Earning Entering the workforce after graduating with a diploma or certificate or degree is no excuse to stop learning. In fact, the savvy and successful know it's just the beginning. A lawyer legally needs to keep learning just to keep his or her license, but anyone who wants to be good at what they do should follow this example -- whatever their field. In short: if you want to succeed at any level, you're never "done" learning. Learning and growth should be seen as a prerequisite for success -- not a distraction. How many books did you read last year? People at the top of their field could probably rattle off a dozen. But the average for someone who thinks they're done with learning? Fewer than one. How do you invest in your own learning? Set aside some time and read (or listen to) a book in your field. Even better: do it at work with your team. You'll see measurable results. Hey Jordan Harbanger here from the Art of Charm. Welcome to MidiSaud Monday. I'm happy to be here with

0:04.6

you kicking off the week with something quick and actionable that you can implement right away that

0:08.8

will make you more magnetic and effective. Now when I was an attorney on Wall Street, I realized I

0:13.9

had just barely begun to learn. Despite four years of undergrad followed by three years at law school,

0:20.0

we were expected to learn most of what we needed to know on the job. When you're a lawyer or a doctor

0:25.4

or other type of licensed professional, it's just accepted that the learning is never done. In fact,

0:31.2

we're actually by law required to keep learning just to keep our license to practice valid.

0:37.4

What I've noticed over the past 10 years coaching and helping entrepreneurs and other folks grinding

0:41.7

it out with a 9-5 is that a lot of folks, especially those who manage attend and run meetings,

0:47.4

maybe the advertising department, the accounting department, etc, a lot of these folks behave as if

0:52.1

their learning is done. There's nothing left in their craft of master, there's no new ground to

0:56.5

break. It's often these same folks who view learning and growth not as some kind of prerequisite,

1:01.7

but as a distraction. The people that I know that are at the absolute top of their respective fields

1:07.4

usually read somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen books per year while the average worker

1:12.0

in any field often reads fewer than one. At which level are you playing? Show me how you invest in

1:18.6

your own learning and that will show me how much you really want to perform at an elite level.

1:24.2

Set aside some time, get a book in your field, even if it's on-audible, whatever,

1:28.7

listen to this book on your commute, craft some time to get the learning going. If you can,

1:34.6

do it at work with your team. You will see measurable results. It's not just something for HR to

1:39.8

bug you about every few times a year and make you fulfill some requirement or check off the box.

1:44.7

This is about your growth as a professional and your growth as a human.

1:48.7

Speaking of growth, don't forget about the AOC challenge. We're taking a step-by-step and helping
