Welcome to another mini-sode of Tides of History.

As always, I'm Patrick Weiman and I'm joined by the wonderful Leah.

And today, we're going to talk about military revolutions.

Patrick, this is a big topic.

I know we talked about it a couple of years ago, but I've completely forgotten.

So what's the military revolution?

And why are we going back to it?

Yes, so we actually talked about this way back at the beginning of Tides.

This would have been, I think, September of 2017.

That's a baby Tides.

That was a baby Tides.

But yes, so the military revolution is a concept in early modern history that's all about

the transformation of warfare, kind of what happens to war in the 16th and 17th centuries

to take it from whatever it is in the Middle Ages to whatever it becomes in the modern period.

So things like the mass adoption of gunpowder, the massive rise in scale of warfare, like,

you know, there are points where Louis XIV has a few hundred thousand soldiers under

arms and France in the late 17th, early 18th centuries.

So war changes drastically.
