In some ways, that's why some of the contemporary sources for her gender isn't so important, because those places has had queenship.

They didn't consider Mary's gender to be abnormal, you know, or her ruling as a woman to be abnormal.

Valerie holds a PhD from the University of Akron and is the author or editor of a number of journal articles, book chapters, or books on Mary the First, unexpected heirs, and Queens in Shakespeare.

Jess holds a PhD from Georgetown University and is an associate professor of history at Southwestern University, Texas.

Her research focuses on the British Empire, the Atlantic World, Comparative Colonialism, and Women and Gender.

Valerie and Jess have recently published two volumes on Mary the First entitled Mary the First in writing, letters, literature and representation, and writing Mary the First, entitled Mary the First in writing, letters, literature,

and representation, and writing Mary the First, history, historiography, and fiction. So they're joining

me today to talk about these latest publications. So let's get started. Thank you both for

joining me. It's wonderful to have you on. Thanks for having us. So I guess we'll get

right in. You can answer in whichever order you would like. But what got you interested in Mary

the First originally? I can tell you she was not my main interest when I was doing my PhD. So I kind of

got backdoored into working on Mary because I had wanted to write my

PhD on Embo Lin. And my PhD advisor informed me wrongly that writing on these six wives of Henry

the 8th was not an academic subject that was for popular audiences only. So after lots and lots and

lots of back and forth, I ended up on

Mary the first because she was a queen regnant. So he found that more acceptable as a topic.

And I started working on her books kind of for the same reason. That was something my advisor

was interested in and we kind of formulated a topic that worked for both of us.
