Hey, it's Mackenzie Abbwood. Welcome to the Steven Universe podcast. This is a special

0:08.0

behind the scenes look at the new Steven Universe episode, Raising the Barn, which you

0:12.0

can watch right now on the CN app. Storyboard artists Amber Craig and Hillary Florida are

0:17.0

here to share some insight, so I'll just jump in and ask, what are you guys thoughts

0:21.4

after seeing the finished episode? Wow. This is your first episode, right? Yeah, it was.

0:29.0

I was so excited to work on this episode. That's a big first episode because there's a lot

0:34.3

that happens and a lot that's a big change, you know? Yeah. So for this episode, something

0:40.0

that really struck out to me was the balance between humor and like soul-crushing sadness.

0:45.0

I feel like that was handled really well. I loved how there would be moments where you were like,

0:52.6

you know, when Paradox walking with Steven and the woods and they'd find a basketball,

0:57.5

and then she's sort of confessing these, like, these very problems, like the problem, you know,

1:02.1

like that she doesn't feel like she can talk to, to lapse about it. So like, how did you guys

1:08.5

approach that balancing the humor and the realness? Well, it was my first episode, so I wouldn't say

1:16.6

that this is how every episode goes, but my process or the process that I had at the time was just

1:24.4

to push it as far as I thought it could go, although that scene that you're talking about was

1:31.4

Hillary's. But thanks. Like, very good. I feel like, gee, I don't even know how to explain.

1:40.4

Well, the classic equation is, you know, tragedy plus time is comedy. And I think when things are sad

1:49.0

is when it's almost easiest to be funny, because it's so hard and humor is definitely my coping

1:58.6

mechanism or like, you know, your self-defense thing. People are looking for anything funny to

2:03.5

take the mind off of the... Yeah, or just put in perspective. I don't know. I think humor is fantastic

2:12.7

in sad situations that given the chance, if you can kind of navigate it with humor,

2:20.0

you're able to process it more. And it's better to watch as an episode. It's a comedy show.
