Summary

A listener shares his first date experience, which didn’t go quite as planned...

Thanks A Million listeners share their “Thanks That Got Away”! The people you never got a chance to say 'thank you' to. The people who changed your whole life or outlook and you didn’t get the opportunity to tell them. Now is your chance!

Perhaps it was a stranger on the bus who picked you up when you were down? The holiday romance that taught you what true love could be? Or the ex who taught you what it definitely wasn’t? Maybe it’s the sibling you never appreciated until it was too late. The nurse who cared for you in your darkest hour or the friend who opened your eyes to the beauty of the world...

Over the years I’ve learnt just how wonderful it feels to say those two simple words ‘thank you’, and how a simple act of gratitude can have truly transformative effects far beyond anything you can imagine.

So write to me – tell me your stories of the thanks that got away so it might inspire us all to take a moment and reflect on those who deserve some gratitude.

To get your story featured just email no more than 600 words to:

[email protected]

You can be kept anonymous if you prefer, but it’s finally a chance to let it out, hold back no more and share that thank you which you never got to give!

Hello, my little sugar puffs. I am back this week with another thanks that got away. I've been

0:04.2

loving these. And remember, if you do want to be featured in this mini pod with your thanks that got

0:09.1

away, the person who you never managed to say thank you to, basically, then hang around until the end

0:13.7

or head to the show notes below for a few more details. Here we go with this week's letter.

Heather was always a little bit special. In my late teens, we all ran about as part of an extended group of teenagers from about four local schools.

0:29.6

So between classmates and brothers and sisters, everyone kind of knew everyone else. We were

0:33.9

of an age where serious relationships were still a bit away, but there were the usual

0:39.3

crushes and frays into early dating. Oh my God. Remember my first kiss was a dare? He didn't even

last 30 seconds. Dying. Heather, however, was universally admired. Even the girls would say

0:54.0

she would look great dressed in a bin bag and the boys would

0:57.0

enthusiastically agree. She had that little bit of star quality which is always indefinable.

1:03.8

She was an only child and a child of the manse. Her dad was a minister of a church. This posed

1:09.8

a little bit of a problem as several potential boyfriends had wilted under Heather's father's stern gaze.

1:16.4

Certainly not one for the faint-hearted.

1:18.4

I did, however, get on really well with her and I think it's fair to say I decided to ask her out after a bit of encouragement from the boys.

1:26.7

I don't know if this is a good idea.

1:29.2

Not that I would have been of suitable material,

1:31.8

I don't think in her father's eyes,

1:33.3

as I didn't work in a bank or drive a Ford escort.

1:35.8

Rather, at the time my Saturday job was replacing exhausts in a garage

1:39.3

and I rode in noisy, though well-maintained 250-cc Suzuki. There's going to be all over that in fairness.

Anyway, long story short, we agreed to go out. You mean she agreed to go out with you. We went to
