Summary

Although there might be some individuals who just seem more optimistic or positive, the truth is that we can all learn to practice optimism and weave some of the tenants into our life. The first element that was discussed includes shifting your perspective that sees things as permanent to seeing things as temporary. The second element is seeing events and painful experiences as singular, not pervasive. The last element of learning optimism is not taking things personally. Whether it’s insecurity or ego, when we take all things personally we bear the weight of other people’s judgments or opinions on our shoulder. We must not attach our own ego to all experiences.

LESSONS: Optimism can be learned and if you practice certain elements of optimism routinely, you can weave a more optimistic perspective into your world. Remember, not everything is permanent or pervasive, and you can weave in more hopeful thoughts when these ways of thinking are challenged. Don’t take things personally. Remind yourself that not all choices or decisions are about YOU. 0:18.8

So let's review the first two elements that we went over in our last two episodes. The first one is

0:24.3

one is don't believe everything is permanent right things can change things

0:29.0

can get better you don't always have to be weighted down by a negative view.

0:33.4

The second is things are not always pervasive.

0:37.0

Just because something happens in your relationship

0:39.1

doesn't mean it's happening in your job and vice versa.

0:42.4

One thing in a singular moment does not mean that it's

0:45.4

going to happen everywhere in your life. Now this third element is probably one of

0:51.1

my favorites because it's don't take things personally right?

0:55.3

So individuals who take things personally tend to believe that everything is

1:00.5

about them. Yes it kind of comes from an ego place,

1:03.3

but mostly it comes from an insecurity place

1:06.1

of believing that if somebody, for example,

1:08.3

has a negative interaction with you,

1:09.8

then it's something you did.

1:11.3

Or if you ask somebody out on a date and they say no then oh my

1:14.5

gosh you're the most horrible person or if you didn't get a job then there's

1:18.3

absolutely something wrong with you and sometimes that's not always the case if you

1:22.2

ask somebody out on a date and they say no,
