Doing reconciliation right begins by understanding how we do reconciliation wrong.

So a lot of the times I think the problem

is that we misdiagnose the problem.

We fundamentally think that racism is an issue

of people being separated, and so then the solution is to bring people together

so that's when you get the pulpit swaps and the choir swaps in churches that's when you get the panels

and the groups and those all serve a purpose.

I'm not saying don't do that. I'm just saying that is necessary but not sufficient.

Doing reconciliation right begins with truth-telling.

We have to know the truth about the issues that divide us in the first place.

And once we know that truth, we have to confess.

And the people responsible have to repent, and they also have to repair.

So it's not just about developing interpersonal relationships, it's about doing something about the harm that has been caused, whether spiritual

or emotional or material.

And we can't stop with relationships.

We have to constantly be building our awareness about race and what it looks like then, what it looks like right now.

We have to be developing our commitment to change policies and the laws and the rules that govern the way we interact in a society.
