Summary

Social isolation can lead to some super unhealthy patterns that we have to be careful of falling into. It can always have a profound impact on our mood and our willingness to engage socially in the future. When you find yourself isolating it's important to remember that at some point you will need to step out of isolation in order to better serve your mental health. Taking that first step can be hard but it is necessary to say YES to that invitation that you would prefer to avoid (rather this is through an e-meeting or in-person). It's also an important step to consider what led you to isolating in the first place.

LESSONS:

  • Social isolation can lead to decreased mood and greater experiential avoidance of connectedness.
  • In order to move away from being socially isolated you must sometimes take the first step of saying 'yes' to gathering that you would prefer to say 'no' to.
  • Evaluate and dig into why you isolated in the first place in order to understand what systems were at play caused the social avoidance.

Hey Spartans, it's Dr. L. here with Spartan Mind. And today we're talking about getting

0:10.8

out of isolation. And what I mean by that is social isolation when you feel like

0:17.4

you have been tucked away in your cave struggling to connect with other

0:21.8

individuals struggling to connect with other individuals,

0:22.6

struggling to connect to be social.

0:25.2

That is what I mean by social isolation.

0:28.3

Now listen, here's the truth.

0:30.6

Oftentimes we drift into isolation because of emotions that we're experiencing

0:36.7

and are difficulty in managing, dealing, or regulating those. Sometimes that's

0:42.0

depression. Sometimes yes the depression is so

0:44.8

bad that it might require that you go see a psychologist or a therapist or

0:49.0

communicate with individuals around you that you are really in a suffering position.

0:55.0

Other times though it can just be emotions that we're having a difficult time dealing with,

1:00.0

not something that's necessarily clinically diagnosable like depression. So for example you could

1:04.6

be feeling shame, right? That feeling that you might not be good enough, that feeling that you're

1:09.1

not really worthy of love and belonging, that could put you in a position of social isolation.

1:15.0

You could also be anxious, feeling really unsure, feeling really unsteady, wanting to hide

1:19.5

away from the world, feeling really nervous or concerned about something, that could put you in social

1:24.4

isolation.

1:25.4

The important thing, though, is remembering what steps get you out of isolation, what makes

1:31.0

you feel more connected. Now, usually we have to start small, right?

1:36.0

Because if we've been feeling really isolated,
