I used to think having a meek spirit meant I needed to be boring.

A meek spirit meant I didn't intentionally rock the boat by saying something that could offend anyone.

It meant I didn't speak up or speak out.

So for me, I rarely spoke at all.

Trust me, I took the whole gentle and quiet spirit thing very seriously.

As best as I could tell, a meek spirit meant living an exceptionally boring Christian life.

It was only later that a mentor explained to me that I was wrongly interpreting 1st Peter 3,4,

which says, rather it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a

gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. She said, Allie, you've confused

having a gentle and quiet spirit with having a gentle and quiet personality. For many of us,

this definition flies in the face of the image that pops in our

mind when we think of having a meek spirit. But God made us who we are for a reason. For my

mentor, I learned that meekness means being powerful, not in ourselves, but in God. If our power

finds its source in the strength of the Savior, seeking to serve others and not dominate

them, then we are living the powerful Christian life we're meant to live.
