Today's Mini is in response to a listener letter.

Here's the letter read with permission from the writer. I listened to one of the episodes from

earlier this year. I think it was doable decluttering with Deanna Yates. In it, there was a joke

about how it's okay to declutter gifts because nobody ever comes

to your house and asks to see that thing they gave you for Christmas. I laughed a little,

but cried a lot. You haven't met my family. When they come over, they expect the plates,

napkins, whatever, that they gifted me for my wedding to be used and ask about them if I don't. I've been

married over 30 years. For example, a relative gave me a piece of furniture when I was a child,

over 40 years ago, and expects to see it in my house when they come over. If it's not where it was

last time, they ask where it is. I feel like I'm a prisoner of my family's generosity.

Obviously, my taste is very different in my 50s than it was in my 20s, but I feel like I'm not

allowed to get rid of anything. My husband and his family are just as bad, insisting that

everything be saved because, quote, it will be worth a lot of money someday.
