Hello, friends, I am so excited to share four fantastic books,

all centered around resilient women. The first title is Call Me Ishmael by Xiaou Lu Guar.

This book sets the trauma stage briskly before launching into the story of Ishmael,

a teenager who, amidst the departure of her entire family, her parents and baby sister are dead,

her brother Joseph has gone to look for work at sea, she dresses like a cabin boy and travels

from England to New York, and then eventually manages to secure a spot on Nimrod,

a whaling ship that embarks on a long intercontinental voyage fueled by Captain Seneca's

obsession to hunt down a white whale. For a good chunk of this book, I was flat out terrified

for this teenage girl, worried about the moment of discovery. This is a

compelling read, mystical, vivid in imagery, while also leaving me holding my breath, waiting for

the moment in which Ishmael's true identity is revealed. Given the timing of the story,

amidst the American Civil War, it felt even more

striking to read diverse characters, Ishmael's friendship with a Polynesian harpooner,

...
