I'm Mary Meckley and I welcome you as you continue with this week's journey.

This is a unique series because you are aligning with the great thought leaders of what is referred to as the axial age.

And this is an age where the great thinkers of the ancient world whose thoughts and philosophies and spirituality impact us to this day.

This is when the people we often refer to when it comes to wisdom and spirituality and key traditions in the eastern and western world were peers in a sense.

They were living at the same time on the planet, more or less.

And they didn't know each other or interact with each other necessarily, but they seemed to

be drawing from a similar thought process. There was a move away from purely mythological

explanations of the world towards more rational and philosophical inquiry.

The myths of the ancient world remained important,

but there was a growing emphasis on reason, logic, and personal experience.

And who were these key thinkers?

They were none other. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, who focused on philosophical reasoning coming from

Greece, the power of the Western world at that time. And Buddha and Mahavira, who is the founder of

Jainism, from India, who focused on spiritual liberation and nonviolence. And then coming from China was

Confucius, Lao Tzu. And they focused on social

harmony and ethical living. And from Persia came Zoroaster with ethical monotheism, the belief in one God.

And the same focus was taking place in Israel at that time with the Hebrew prophets.
