I often wonder how directors get the opportunity

to direct their first feature film.

It's a huge responsibility overseeing the construction

of a multi-million dollar production

and tough to hand over the reins to someone who has never done it before.

We've spoken before of the different paths to get there,

acting, writing, making shorts and music videos.

Every director seems to have a unique story

behind how they got behind the camera.

But when you get that first shot, what then?

Independent movies used to be able to find screens

in art houses and multiplexes,

and independent movies was where most people got their start.
