Summary

Aki grew up in Sicily. On May 23, 1992, the mafia blew up the highway behind his grandmother’s house, killing a judge named Giovanni Falcone. Since Dominic is away right now, we’re bringing you the first of two very special guest appearances from Millennial History, a new podcast series reliving impactful moments in recent world history, as seen through the eyes of people who were children when they happened. In interviews with musical journalist Andrea Voets, they reflect on the far-reaching consequences of the events on their lives and societies. Andrea and composer/sound designer Luke Deane have combined these testimonies with music donated by more than sixty bands to create a unique form of ‘musical journalism’. Producers: Andrea Voets and Luke Deane Special thanks to: Alfio Antico, Giulia Tagliavia, Francesco Guaiana, Salvatore Bonafede This podcast is part of the Are We Europe family. Hi, Katie.

Oh, hello. Hi Katie.

Oh, hello.

0:24.9

Decided to grace us with your presence, have you?

0:27.2

Yeah, it's been a while.

0:28.5

I've missed you.

0:29.3

I've missed you too.

0:30.7

What have you been doing?

0:31.9

Yeah, I'm currently in the middle of nowhere, living on a farm, making a piece of music theatre, a kind of queer, feminist

0:39.7

deconstruction of the role of the mother figure in the Catholic Mass. Does that make sense?

0:45.5

There's a lot going on there, a lot to unpack. Whilst living amongst chickens and horses,

0:49.8

it's like pretty idyllic, actually. I recommend it to anyone. I'm very jealous. That sounds like exactly

0:54.8

what I want to be doing right now. Yeah, sadly we've had to move into the hustle and bustle of the

0:59.6

big city these last few days to rehearse. And we actually found ourselves rather shockingly being

1:04.6

placed in a studio next door to people doing laughter workshops, which was like relatively

1:10.3

traumatic to hear all day through the door.

1:13.7

What exactly is that? Is that sort of like laughter as exercise kind of thing?

1:17.3

Not necessarily as exercise, I don't think, but like as a communal activity to raise your spirits.

1:24.4

Oh, I actually did that once. You did it? Yeah, I joined a free workshop at the South Bank Centre in London and it weirdly left me with,

1:32.8

not chest pain afterwards, but quite sore ribs.

1:35.8

It's a bit of a workout.

1:36.8

I can imagine.
