Following his 1983 arrest, Mike DeBardeleben would stand trial for various offenses. First came a series of counterfeiting trials in Tennessee and North Carolina, which were then followed by a number of trials related to the violent crimes, abductions and assaults that DeBardeleben had carried out in Maryland, New Jersey, and Virginia. After receiving an almost-comical amount of time - 375 years plus two additional life sentences - DeBardeleben would slowly rot behind bars, before dying of pneumonia in January of 2011.

Yet, despite so many of his secrets becoming known to the world, the mystery of Mike DeBardeleben's crime spree endures to this day...

Joe Rapini and David Starr were two men that lived together in Greece, New York, a

northwestern suburb of Rochester.

The two lived at 98 Applewood Drive, and were in the midst of a happy life together in the spring of 1983.

On the morning of Wednesday, April 13th, Joe had evidently come down with something.

He wasn't feeling well, so he took the day off from work.

David meanwhile still went to work that day, suspecting Joe to have contracted the

simple flu. When he returned home later that day though, he discovered that Joe was much sicker than he had originally suspected.

Joe was running a serious fever and had been unable to keep anything down all day long.

Out of an abundance of caution, the two decided to drop by the hospital that evening.

Thankfully, the doctor that saw Joe said he did not need to stay overnight, so he could return home.

Joe was administered a sedative to help him sleep that night, which would begin to take effect almost immediately.

Just after 9 p.m. the two returned home from the hospital, and nothing in their neighborhoods seemed to be amiss.
