Summary
Reporting live from the FIGS annual retreat, D and Jackie chat with Midwife Henna all about midwifery and Roe v. Wade. She shares how she got into midwifery, and the many misconceptions around the practice. She discusses how midwifery is the standard care in other countries until alternate intervention is required, while there is such a stigma surrounding it in America. She explains why she couldn’t see herself working in a birth center, and the high mortality rates in the United States for women giving birth, especially for women of color. Henna highlights the different benefits midwives bring to the birthing community, including shared decision making and autonomy, and the negative repercussions that the overturning of Roe v. Wade would have. Danielle speaks to the lack of education and contraception in this country, and lastly, Henna discusses her platform and offers advice for people considering a career in labor and delivery.
