0:00.0 | Hello, welcome along to a brand new episode of the Fun Kid Science Midweekly. It's your bite-sized special. Let's search out the universe. Find some strange science secrets lurking nearby. My name is Dan. This week we've got more of your science questions answered. What |
0:22.9 | colours can your favourite animal friends see? And where did trees come from? The first question this |
0:31.4 | week is from Edith. How was the first tree created? It does sound amazing, doesn't it, to think that trees are around, |
0:40.2 | that trees have been around for like millions and millions of years, way before anyone was here |
0:44.9 | to actually plant their seeds. Let's find out why. About 400 million years ago, during the |
0:51.2 | Devonian period, trees were first around. That's where we first know that |
0:56.6 | they existed. Now, like most things that have appeared and evolved over time, they come from |
1:02.7 | smaller things that were there before. So in the old waters back then, you would have bacteria, |
1:08.3 | tiny bits of life from there small weeds grew and then through |
1:12.9 | evolution through natural selection some of those weeds got bigger became proper plants and they |
1:18.2 | were better at getting the sunlight which they needed to live and thrive so they kind of took over |
1:22.2 | and then bushes grew from those weeds and then trees grew from those bushes. Quite a lot of those plants |
1:29.1 | early on, they made more of themselves, they reproduced without the need for seeds. But today, |
1:38.2 | trees are grown from seeds, aren't they? That took quite a while, about another 350 million years ago. |
1:43.9 | That was when trees |
1:45.4 | first started to develop seeds that they could drop, which maybe animals could pick up and |
1:51.2 | take and accidentally plant somewhere else, and that would make other trees. And over these last |
1:56.9 | 350 million years, it's grown to have full forests, huge jungles and all the trees that we see |
2:05.5 | through the sky today. So the first tree was created about 400 million years ago. Thank you for the |
2:10.7 | question. Here is one from Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, who wants to know, |
2:16.7 | can cats and dogs see in colour like humans? |
2:20.3 | Well, yes and no here. They can see in colour, but not quite like humans. You see, colour is our |
