on Earth.

Harvard professor Avi Loeb says the hundreds of tiny fragments that he and his expedition

found at the bottom of the Pacific are interstellar, definitely from beyond our solar system.

Avi executed the mission with the help of his student and associate, Amir Saraj.

We talked with Avi about the discovery after his return from the South Pacific.

Here he is.

It has been the most thrilling couple of weeks of my scientific career.

Basically, we are fortunate to be the first humans to put our hands on material from a

large object, roughly a meter in size, that came from outside the solar system.

What never happened before, and the reason we knew that this object came from outside

the solar system is because on January 8, 2014, the US government detected the fireball

from this object that collided with Earth.

We see such meteors every year, most of them are from the solar system, they are just

rocks floating around from some debris, the Lego pieces that were used to make the planets

that were left behind and every now and then one of them collides with Earth.

But this one was different because it was moving very fast, faster than the escape

speed from the solar system, meaning that it came from outside of it.

It's not bound to the sun, like all the other rocks that we had seen before.

That was what the government data implied based on the analysis we did back in 2019 with

my student, Amir Saraj.
