Hello, today, fresh looks at the past and how it shapes are present.

The groundbreaking 60s literary star, now done, joins me to discuss the reissue of her cult classic Talking to Women,

and will pay tribute to a Croatian writer who is

unafraid to confront the horrors of Europe's history. Similar horrors form the backbone of the

latest novel from our first guest today, a master of fictional history, also renowned for his

meditations on memory, Michael Ondarchi. Author of the booker winning the English patient,

Undarci's last visit to open book was with Anil's Ghost,

in which he revisited his birthplace, Sri Lanka.

With his new novel, Warlight, he's similarly sifting through time,

creating a narrative from a cacophony of memories.

But this time, the setting is post-war London,

wherein Darcy lived as a schoolboy before emigrating to Canada. Warlight begins with two

teenagers, Nathaniel and Rachel, abandoned by their parents to the care of a couple of shady

individuals they nicknamed the Moth and the Darter. But has their mother really gone to Singapore?

And if so, why did she leave her packed suitcase behind?
