Summary

Mike Munger of Duke University talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about why milk is in the back of the grocery store. Michael Pollan and others argue that milk is in the back so that customers, who often buy milk, will be forced to walk through the entire story and be encouraged by the trek to buy other items. Munger and Roberts argue that competition encourages stores to serve customers and that alternative explanations explain where milk is found in the store. The conversation also discusses restaurant pricing, government "nudging" and related issues of grocery economics.

Today is August 29, 2013, and my guest is Mike Munger of Duke University. This is Mike's 24th

0:41.0

appearance that's two dozen times count him, two dozen twenty-four on econtalk. Mike, welcome back.

Thanks so much. Our topic for today is milk. But before we get there, I want to alert

0:53.0

listeners that later this week, this Wednesday, ideally September the 4th, we expect to be releasing

0:58.5

a bonus midweek econ talk episode. Last April, Liberty Fund, the educational foundation that

1:05.0

sponsors this podcast and Butler University, hosted an evening called Capitalism Government

1:11.0

and the Good Society. The invited speakers were Mike Munger, Richard Epstein, Jamie Galbraith,

1:16.4

and Robert Skodelski. Unfortunately, last minute travel problems kept Galbraith from attending,

1:21.8

but the other three soldered on. In each of the three speakers made a brief presentation on the

1:26.9

topic of Capitalism Government and the Good Society, and that was followed by a conversation

1:31.5

among the three that I moderated, a sort of econtalk all-star game. It was a lot of fun,

1:36.3

and the evening was filmed by John Popola and his production team in emergent order.

1:40.6

And what we're going to release on Wednesday the 4th is both the audio and the video of the event.

1:46.7

It's about two hours long, about 40-ish minutes of presentations from the three speakers,

1:52.0

and then about an hour of conversation. I hope you enjoy it. Now on to milk.

The idea for this week's episode came from a brief video interview with Michael Poland,

who described the supermarket as, quote, a treacherous environment if you're trying to eat
